PREGNANCY GINGIVITIS
Hormonal changes make gingival tissue more susceptible to inflammation, resulting in a chronic gingival response, often referred to as pregnancy gingivitis. Characteristic symptoms include: redness and swelling of gum tissue. During pregnancy, two hygienic treatments at the dentist’s office are recommended for the pregnant woman: one during the first trimester and a second treatment at the very beginning of the third trimester.
In fact:
• Women suffering from periodontitis are up to 7.5-fold more at risk of giving birth to a premature baby or a low-birth-weight baby.
• Oral bacteria have the potential to cross the placental barrier and expose the fetus to infections.
Periodontal disease (inflammation of tissues supporting the teeth: alveolar bone and gums) can be avoided by regular monitoring by your hygienist.
